FUNDAMENTALS   
      OF OOPS

INTRODUCTION:
Each programming language enforces a particular style of programming. The way of organizing a program is influenced by its style of programming and it is known as programming paradigm. Programming paradigm provides a technique for writing ‘‘good’’ programs that facilitates in representing and manipulating real world entities eaily and effectively. Moreover, it is easy to maintain and reuse the code once you follow a good programming paradigm.
 1.1 OBJECT ORIENTED PROGRAMMING CONCEPTS
Some of the important programming paradigms that are developed and followed in the existing programming languages are as follows:
• Procedure-oriented programming
• Logic pograming
• Functional Progrmming
• Object-oriented programming
The advantages of each paradigm and the details of the features supported by the programming language are discussed below:
Procedure Oriented Programming:
Procedure oriented programming is composed of one or more units or modules either user coded or taken from built-in library. Each module in turn may contain one or more procedures. The major advantages of procedure oriented programming are effective reading, computation, decision mking, iteration, sequencing and printing. The languages such as Fortran, COBOL and C are examples of procedure oriented languages. These languages perform well for small programs and individual algorithms. Moreover, the programs written in these languages are flexible, maintainable and easy to read when they

are used to build applications where changes are minimum. However, they are not suitable to develop complex real world applications where the user requirements change continuously.
Logic Programming
Logic programming provides a way to represent and manipulate the real world knowledge using first order predicate logic. The theorems, algorithms, inference rules and procedures such as unification and resolution are well understood by mathematicians, engingeers and researchers in Artificial Intelligence. Prolog (Programing in Logic) is an example of a programming language that follows the logic programming paradigm. Though this language provides a number of important
